Happy World Circus Day 2024
- Wednesday 17th April 2024
Officially today (Wednesday 17th April 2024) but mainly celebrated by circus performers around the world on the closest Saturday (20th April 2024), World Circus Day recognises the heritage of circus, and is a celebration of the circus community and the art of circus performers.
The special day was proclaimed by Princess Stephanie of Monaco and made official in 2010, after she recognised the importance of the cultural heritage of circus.
Each year, the day is marked and celebrated by the Endresz family – the talented family behind the production of the Blackpool Tower Circus show since 1991.
If you visit the Tower Circus this year, you will see the hilarious duo Mooky & Mr Boo - the circus characters of brothers Laci Jnr and Bubu Endresz. Laci and Bubu are the 3rd generation of clowns in their family, stepping into the large comedy shoes of their father Laci Endresz Snr. The show you see today is also directed and produced by Laci, along with all the family.
The Endresz Family have produced the Tower’s show for over 30 years, but the arena has a heritage dating even further back, having seen its first season in 1894.
The Blackpool Tower Circus arena has been home to some amazing clowns over the years, and performed in by hundreds (actually thousands) of skilled acrobats and stunt performers from all around the world!
Amongst the previous clowns to have caused laughter and mayhem in Blackpool is the famous Charlie Cairoli. Charlie performed at the Tower from 1946 to 1979. Just like the Endresz family, clowning was a family business for Charlie, who performed with his son, Charlie Junior, for his final six years at the Tower.
This year, The Blackpool Tower Circus is celebrating its 130th year! Laci and Bubu Endresz are delighted to have produced the 130th show, bringing together many acts from around the world specifically for this year! The 2024 acts include Guinness World Record holder trapeze artist Alexander Lichner, a contortionist, acrobats, a juggler and many more surprises!
This year’s show is now running and will be on throughout the year until 3rd November 2024.
If you would like to visit on World Circus Day, there’s a performance at 2.30pm on Wednesday 17th April, and two shows on Saturday 20th April at 1pm & 4pm. Tickets available here.
