Strictly Come Dancing - Blackpool Style!

Mid-way through every Strictly Come Dancing season, the BBC team pack up their sequins and head up north for a very special episode… The celebrities, judges and professional dancers board the Blackpool bus ready to take a whirl around the famous dance floor at The Blackpool Tower Ballroom. For many of the contestants the Blackpool show is a massive aim, relishing the chance to grace the prestigious floor where so many professionals have danced before them. The magical Blackpool Tower Ballroom was built in 1894 and its spectacular architecture and unique sprung floor have become world-famous among dancers. It forms the centrepiece to any series of Strictly Come Dancing, and is the week that the celebrities strive for when they shimmy their first tentative steps on the show.

History - Come Dancing!

The venue is where the original Come Dancing series was filmed in the 1970s and the block wooden floor is famously springy underfoot (to reduce the impact on the dancers' joints). Come Dancing was a British ballroom dancing competition show that ran on and off on the BBC from 1950 to 1998, becoming one of television's longest-running shows. Unlike its follow-up show, Strictly Come Dancing, contestants were not celebrities. For the professional dancers, it's a return to where many of them will have competed during their careers, with numerous national and international competitions being held there.
