Illuminations Switch On

The first event happening during September in Blackpool is the Illuminations Switch On – one of the biggest events in the seaside town’s calendar. Taking place once a year at the start of September, the event signals the beginning of the Illuminations running throughout the winter months.

This year, the event is being hosted outdoors and will include a Nickelodeon Grand Parade, family entertainment on the Tower Festival Headland and fireworks to close the evening. Guests can also expect a performance from Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who will also be the one to pull the switch to start this year’s Illuminations.

The event will be happening on the 1st of the month and is free to attend. Following the event, visitors to the town can enjoy the Illuminations display up until 1st January 2024.

Blackpool World Fireworks Championships 2023

Another event in Blackpool starting in September, with a limited number of dates, is the Blackpool World Fireworks Championship 2023.

The event will be taking place across 3 evenings - 16th September, 30th September and 20th October – and will bring a spectacular firework display over the beach, in front of The Blackpool Tower.

Three countries will be competing with their display, and like in previous years, these are set to be some of the busiest events in Blackpool this year. And the best part is, they’re free! Simply make your way down to Blackpool’s promenade on the three evenings and enjoy the dazzling display of lights.
